BUT...after being kept out of the garden by the rains for so, so long, we managed yesterday evening to plant the second round of corn. That is quite an accomplishment, given the recent circumstances. Here is our work banked against the existing corn ,

and here is an inside view of what I think anyone would say is, indeed, a beautiful thing.
In case anyone is wondering about the tracks down the corn rows, no, we didn't plant with a tractor. We plant everything by hand (soil is too heavy for push planters and garden too small for tractor mounted planters). However, I found that corn germination is outstanding when I use the riding lawnmower to pack the seed beds. It looks pretty silly, driving up and down the bare rows with the mower. But the proof is in the pudding or creamed corn or whatever. It also saves a lot of work tamping the soil down with a rake.

However, I have found that we get outstanding corn germination when I use the riding lawnmower to pack the soil after planting. It looks pretty silly, driving up and down the bare rows with a mower. But the proof is in the pudding, or creamed corn or whatever. It also saves a lot of time packing the soil with a rake. I do this only with corn because it packs the soil extra firmly.
