First freeze...actually last night but this night will be colder. Vegetable-gathering over here.....most of this would not freeze in any case (or, like lettuce, freeze and then magically UN-freeze! always amazes me) but we are into the late fall early harvest.
Romain is safe from a freeze, particularly a light one - but this is beautiful. We had bad germination, so there aren't many...happy to see this.
This is fun....we've had these banana trees and all of us who live here already know that, you may get this far, but they probably won't ripen. No, you will never, ever have bananas, even though you can always hope!
Big beautiful GREENS for tomorrow - we've been selling them on the weekends...Will is getting a head-start, as is Pretty Boy and the 'cat-rock'
house-spinach (not for selling - because Spinach); and tarragon which will all freeze but come back in the spring.......
and then we have the over-abundance of lemons....! and more lemons!
oh! and dill! lots of beautiful dill....a wonderful fall herb that will not kick the bucket in a freeze....
....we didn't really expect this abundance this fall - it's been a hard couple of farming years. The new greenhouse will go a long way towards maintaining part of the garden no matter the weather. For now, we're pretty content...

Fall Veggies!!
To local food enthusiasts and greens lovers,
We are sending this notice out to ex-CSA members and new friends to let you know that Port Hudson Organics is back into limited operation with an abundance leafy green vegetables and the promise of a wide variety of everyone’s favorite winter vegetables in the coming weeks. For those of you who haven’t been out in a while or who haven’t checked our blog and Facebook posts, please note our latest addition – a 2,100 square foot greenhouse that will accommodate our tractor-mounted tiller. We have inaugurated this new asset by planting it chock-a-block with beets, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and herbs – all on drip irrigation and all picture perfect.
In the garden, we also have a wide assortment of greens, including mustard, collards, and turnip types (and they are digging the wet and cool weather).
We encourage you to come out this Saturday if you have a taste for succulent, unadulterated produce, picked to order. This Saturday we are offering the following:
Mustard greens (a very mild, smooth-leaved Oriental variety)
Collard greens
Turnip greens
Kale
Beets (red and yellow) – currently in the small-bulb stage with beautiful greens
We also have an abundance of our exceptional farm honey (great for Christmas gifts).
We would appreciate an email reply if you plan to come so we can anticipate some of the picking. It is not required, so feel free to just show up – we will manage. We also understand that the weather is a little iffy, but that will not dampen our spirits and the greenhouse is covered, so come out anyway.
We will be sending periodic updates on the status of other vegetables which will be maturing in the coming weeks. The current plan is to be open each Saturday 8AM-4PM through Christmas. If you are unsure, or would like to make other arrangements, please feel free to email or call us at the following and we will accommodate where possible.
Please feel free to forward this to friends and family!
